Obituary

Atty. Kathleen "Kate" Putney Towers, 56, of New Bedford, passed away Saturday March 21, 2020 at Massachusetts General Hospital peacefully in her sleep after a ten-year battle with cancer. She fought till the very end, remaining in positive spirits. She was the wife of William J. Towers.

Born in Concord and raised in Norwell, the daughter of Kathleen A. (Taylor) Putney of Pembroke and the late Richard A. Putney, she lived in New Bedford for the past 20 years.

Kate attended UMass Amherst and then received a Master’s degree in education at Northeastern. She then received her Juris Doctor from Suffolk Law School. Kate was a private practice attorney in New Bedford. She was a bar advocate representing the less fortunate.

A very civic-minded individual, she ran for the Ward 5 City Council seat in the 2016 election. She was involved with local charities and scholarship committees. She was a kind soul that improved the life of others.

Kate liked to travel, especially to beach locations, she also enjoyed eating at great restaurants and spending time with her dogs. She was a Pats and a Red Sox fan, and was a proud winner of one of the largest football pools in the area. She enjoyed spending time with her grandson, who referred to her as Nana Kate.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her stepchildren, Daniel Towers and his companion Amanda Pereira of Acushnet, and Mary-Elizabeth Towers and her husband Joshua Mello of Fairhaven; three brothers, Andrew Putney of Madison, WI, Brock Putney of NH, and Daniel Putney of Norfolk, MA; a grandson, Daniel Towers Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Due to current restrictions on public gatherings, a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
