Obituary

Marilyn Ruth (McCarthy) Young, a resident of Charlestown and former resident of Medford entered into eternal life on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness. She was 77 years old.

Marilyn was born in Charlestown on April 27, 1942, a daughter of the late Charles and Mabel (Rand) McCarthy. She grew up in Charlestown where she was educated in the Boston Public School system. Mal was a proud graduate of the Boston Public Schools External Diploma Program. Mal worked at the Charlestown Naval Shipyard for many years and that is where she met the love of her life Don Young.

Mal had recently relocated to the Zelma Lacey Assisted Living Facility in Charlestown. She was happy to be back living in her hometown and enjoyed being part of the Zelma community. Mal enjoyed meeting new people and spending time conversing with others. She was kind to all and easy to spend time with. Mostly, Mal enjoyed spending time with her large extended family. It was her biggest joy in life and she always had a smile on her face when she was surrounded by her family.

Marilyn was the beloved wife of the late Donald Young (retired U.S. Navy) who passed away in 1999. Don was the love of her life and she missed him dearly. She is the devoted sister of Margaret O’Callahan of Charlestown, Elaine Dykens and her husband Jack of Woburn, Velna Marsden of Medford, and Michael McCarthy and his wife Karen of Framingham. Mal is the beloved sister-in-law of Ann McCarthy of Shrewsbury and John Hendrickson of Arkansas. Mal was the sister of the late Robert McCarthy, Charles McCarthy, Jean Bossi, Patricia Hendrickson, and Helen Orpen. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.


Mal’s family would like to thank the residents and staff of the Zelma Lacey House in Charlestown for their kindness to Mal over the last three years. Additionally, we would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses and support staff at MGH for their incredible kindness and compassion to Mal during her illness.

Memorial donations in Marilyn’s name may be made to The Old Charlestown School Girls Association, P.O. Box 290276, Charlestown, Mass. 02129.

A memorial mass and a celebration of Mal's life will be announced at a later date.

DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, MAL'S FUNERAL SERVICES AND BURIAL AT THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION NATIONAL CEMETERY IN BOURNE WILL BE PRIVATE.
