Obituary

CHICOPEE – John P. Garvey, 80, of Chicopee and a former resident of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. He passed into Eternal Life at Willimansett Center West in Chicopee surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on June 24, 1939, a beloved son of the late Michael J. and Catherine T. (Kearney) Garvey. He was raised on Hungry Hill, graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield and had lived on Hungry Hill for many years before moving to Chicopee in 2001. He served his country in the United States Army and attained the rank of Private First Class. He was employed at the United States Postal Service for 36 years as a Letter Carrier and retired in 2000. John also worked as a longtime bartender at The Keg Room in Springfield where he made many friends. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. He was a member of the Marconi Club, the American Legion Post 430 and a Life Member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Club, all in Springfield. Above all, John loved spending time with his family and his many friends. John leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Margaret R. “Peggy” (Bergdoll) Garvey. They were married on August 22, 1964 at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 55 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving son and daughter-in-law, Sean M. Garvey and his wife, Sheila, of West Springfield; his two cherished grandsons, Daniel and Michael Garvey; his dear brother, Michael Garvey and his wife, Pat, of Chicopee; his two dear sisters and his dear brother-in-law, Maryellen Garvey and Catherine Pickul and her husband, Henry, all of Chicopee; his dear sister-in-law, Mary Bergdoll of Springfield; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Garvey and Bergdoll families. His funeral services will be private and his Committal Service will be private at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. His funeral arrangements are entrusted to the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. Due to the current circumstances, a Memorial Mass and Reception will be held at a later date to be announced to celebrate John’s life and his love of parties. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or the Shriners Hospital for Children, Springfield Unit, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
