Anne Elizabeth (Hills) Smith

Anne Elizabeth (Hills) Smith (97) of Scituate, MA passed away on April 16, 2020 at the Bel-Air Nursing and Rehab Center in Goffstown, New Hampshire. Her death was not pandemic related and deepest appreciation to the staff for their loving kindness.

Born in Maryland, Betty grew up in New Jersey, spending family time in Marblehead, MA where she first met her husband, Alfred R. Smith, jr. Marrying after World War II, Betty and A.R. started their life together in Marblehead. When A.R. went back in the Navy again, they transferred to many placed while raising their 4 children. By the 1960’s they were able to settle in Scituate which they both loved for the many years they were there. Betty worked at two banks on the South Shore and previously worked in offices and even as a switchboard operator!

Always on the go, Betty enjoyed movies with the girls, swimming at the Norwell pool, traveling, walking, gardening, sports (especially her Red Sox), the ocean, reading, and time with friends and family. Family was the heart of all that she did; as grandchildren and great grandchildren came along, it was always certain that Betty would bring bubbles for the little people, gracing her as “the bubble lady”. Over the years, Betty collected many nicknames including: Big Liz, Windy, Mom, Ma, Sea Nymph, Gram, Grammy, Nana, Great Grammy, and Super Nana.

Predeceased by her husband A.R. in 2002, Betty was also predeceased by her sister Marjorie Shaw, daughters Linda Cusick and Susann Hunter, and a grandson. Surviving family includes her son Brian and wife Donna Smith, daughter Janis Minshull and husband David Pappalardo, and son-in-law James Cusick. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren that she adored.

At Betty’s request, there will be no services. She’d surely appreciate any random acts of kindness and hugs when the time is right. Donations are not necessary, but if you want to…Betty loved The Children’s Literacy Foundation as it brings kids and books together. Their website can be found at clifonline.org.

So many memories and know that she is always saying 143!
