Caroline “Carol” L. Seward, 93, of Hanson, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 15, 2020.
Carol was born in Brockton on September 10, 1926 to Carlton and Louise (Porter) Tucker.
She was raised in Whitman and graduated from Whitman High School in 1943. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from MIT in 1947 and was employed as a food technologist for Ocean Spray Cranberries for 30 years.
She married her beloved husband of 59 years, Wilson “Bill” Seward in 1960. Baking, gardening, crafting, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her favorite pastimes.
Carol was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Whitman for over 70 years. During that time, she served as the church clerk, a member of several boards, and, most recently, the church historian. She also supported numerous fundraising endeavors.
Carol was dedicated to philanthropy. Her favorite charities were Heifer International, Habitat for Humanity, and Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child.
Carol was an avid genealogist and conducted extensive research into her family history. She was an active member of the Bates Association who recently awarded her with a plaque in appreciation of her service.
Carol loved to travel with her family, especially during her retirement. She wintered in Florida for many years, enjoyed several trips to Canada, and toured England, Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland, and Germany.
Carol is survived by her husband, Wilson “Bill” Seward of Hanson; her sister, Nancy McLaughlin of Hanson; her daughter, Roberta Spencer of Hanson; her three grandchildren, Matthew Spencer of Hanson, Amy Griffin of Warwick, RI, and Elizabeth Spencer of Attleboro; her two great grandchildren, Logan and Declan; her nieces and their husbands, Julie and Arthur LaChance of Sandwich, Laurie and Jim Armstrong of Hanson, and Jean and Michael Kelly of Hanson; her nephew’s companion, Sandi Birdsall of Plymouth; 10 great nieces and nephews; and a great, great niece and nephew. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, George McLaughlin of Hanson, her son-in-law, Frederick Spencer of Hanson, and her nephew, Peter McLaughlin of Plymouth.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
