Obituary

Carmen “Mita” Almeyda Jorge, 102 of New Bedford died Tuesday April 7, 2020 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Antonio Jorge.
Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on October 19, 1917, the daughter of the late Natividad Sosa and Juan Cancio Almeyda. She migrated to New Bedford in 1950 with her beloved late husband.
Carmen was a communicant of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church. She worked as a seamstress for many years. She took great pride in raising a big family which included her 11 children and 6 grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing (especially doll dresses), playing dominoes, scratching lottery tickets and her occasional trips to the casino. She especially loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by sons, Rafael, Miguel, Jose, Edwin, David and James Jorge; and daughters, Blanca (Jorge) Guzman, Carmen, Daisy and Suzanne Jorge; along with 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son Luis Jorge, three sisters Ana Celia, Ana Teresa and Saturnina Almeyda and three brothers Nemesio, Francisco and Jose Ramon Almeyda.
The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation for the great care and support from all of the nurses and staff at Southcoast Visiting Nurse Association.
