Obituary

LIMERICK- Merle Marie Delia (Morrill) Day, 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Southern Maine Healthcare in Biddeford. She was born in Limerick on December 13, 1936, to the late John and Germaine (Paradis) Morrill.

Merle attended the Limerick Grade School and graduated from Limerick High School in 1955 as Valedictorian of her class. Shortly after graduating, she married her first love Raymond Day and together they proceeded to build their home in Limerick. She often commented that she was immensely proud of living her entire life in Limerick - first in the village and then in the home where they raised their family.

Merle followed in her father’s footsteps and served as the Limerick Town Clerk and Tax Collector for approximately 20 years. Following her career with the Town, she worked as a Postal Clerk in the Limerick Post Office for 18 years. She enjoyed being a valued member of the town and enjoyed the opportunity to serve, interact, and converse with fellow townspeople on a daily basis.

In addition to being an active member of the Women’s Fellowship at the Limerick Congregational Church Merle enjoyed many hobbies. In her younger years, she enjoyed camping and traveling with her family. More recently, her spare moments were spent gardening, mowing her lawn, knitting, completing puzzles, watching the deer pass through her yard, and attending social events with her cherished friends. She also enjoyed reminiscing and recounting stories of life growing up in small town Maine.

She is predeceased by her parents; her husband’s parents; her loving husband, Raymond Earl Day; her half-sister, Alice; and several brother and sisters-in-law.

Merle is survived by her daughter Robin Lynne Fortney and her husband James of Limerick; her son Steven Ray Day and his wife Suzanne of Cornish; grandson Christopher Fortney and his wife Ryann of Windham; grandson Brandon Fortney and his wife Catherine of Waterboro; and great grandchildren Callaway Fortney, Mila Fortney, and Austin Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at the Poitras, Neal & York Funeral Home in Cornish, Maine when it is safer for everyone to gather. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Limerick.
