Gregory A. Smith, age 86, of Stoughton, formerly of Canton passed away peacefully April 3rd surrounded by his loving family. Greg was born in Boston, raised in S. Boston and graduated from B.C. High class of 1952 and served in the United States Air Force. Greg previously lived in Canton for 37 years before moving to Stoughton. He worked for Polaroid Corp for over 20 years before retiring in 1988. He was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton where he was a member of the church choir. Greg was also a member of the K of C Council #2095 in Canton, the Canton Bay Statesman Barbershop Chorus and Blue Hill Four Barbershop Quartet.
Beloved husband of the late Ellen J. (Doyle). Survived by his children: Maureen Powers and her husband Al of NH; Lillian Supple and her husband Steve of Milford; Maryellen Durkot and her husband Richard of Nowthen, MN; Elizabeth Smith of Venice, Florida and Gregory Smith and his husband Jack O‘Leary of Boston. Brother of Bradley Smith of Essex. Predeceased by brother Kenneth Smith of Florida, Betty Mullen of Brockton, Arthur Smith of Holbrook and Donald Smith of Georgia. Devoted grandfather to Albie, Erin, Brendan, Derek, Lauren, Kayla, John, Sarah and Shannon. Great-Grandfather to Nora, Albert and Lila. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family from Newfoundland, Canada.
Greg had a faith that extended Jesus’ love to all he met. He was happiest when he served others. His days included mass, breakfast/coffee at Kelley’s or McDonalds’ with cherished friends. He loved his South Boston roots, frequently visiting Castle Island. He was always ready with a song and a joke to bring a smile to your face.
Due to the current Covid 19 directives a private graveside service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Greg’s memory to Operation Rescue : Boston at www.orboston.org.
