Warren Daniel Nurmi of Brookfield passed away peacefully in his sleep, Saturday, March 21st, at the age of 77. Known as "Danny" to his family and friends, he grew up in the town of Rutland and enlisted in the US Air Force at the age of 17. He was a Vietnam Era
veteran, and from 1961-1965 served as an aircraft technician, working on C-130 and C-135 aircraft. He married Karen Norquist of Holden in 1962, and resided most of his life in the town of Barre, where together, he and Karen raised their six daughters: Becky,
Terri, Tammy, Traci, Sheri, and Kerry. They enjoyed family vacations, camping, and motorcycle riding.
For most of his career, Danny worked as a stationary engineer. Working at Rutland State Hospital, Erving Paper, and the Wyman-Gordon corporation, where he proudly helped build aircraft components for our nation's military and space program. He was a member of American Legion Post 2 and a long-time member of the Barre Sportsman's Club.
After retiring from Wyman-Gordon, he moved to a place he long loved, the Tennessee Smoky Mountains. A Civil War and military history enthusiast, Danny enjoyed touring the many battlefields and military museums throughout the south. He liked to tell the story of how on one trip to tour the National Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola FL, his GPS mistakenly sent him to a highly secured entrance gate instead of the museum's regular visitors' entrance. When questioned at the gate by two suspicious military police officers as to what business he had approaching that gate, Danny energetically replied "I'm here to re-enlist!" (he was never one to miss an opportunity to make someone laugh). He is survived by his wife of 58 years, his daughters, 17 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He will be missed.
