SOMERSET… George C. “Sneaker” McDonald, 94, of Somerset, formerly of Fall River passed away February 21, 2020 at Clifton Rehabilitation Nursing Center.
He was the loving husband of the late Evelyn (Couture) McDonald to whom he had been married for 41 years.
Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Christopher J. and Lillian (Brogan) McDonald and had been a lifelong resident of this city.
Mr. McDonald was educated in the Fall River School System where he played shortstop for the late Luke Urban at Durfee High School. George went on to serve in the United States Army and then spent 30 years as a Fall River Police Officer. He was the manager, a coach and league president of the Fall River Junior Twilight Baseball League for 61 years, had played CYO Basketball and was active of several committees with the former Immaculate Conception and Notre Dame Churches. He also managed the Immaculate Conception baseball team which he led to two Diocese Championships.
George and Evelyn received many awards from city and state officials for their work with the youth of the community throughout the years and had the baseball diamond at Lafayette Park named in their honor. He was awarded Police Officer of the Year in 1986 for his heroism during a housefire and earned the Hometown Hero Award in 1997.
He was a member of the Fall River Police Relief Association and the Massachusetts Police Association.
He is survived by his nephew: Steven McDonald and his family of Wakefield, MA and several other nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Raymond and Leo McDonald.
