Obituary

Earl Walter Watts, 87, of Londonderry, NH died Monday, February 6, 2006 in the Ainsley Place in Nashua, NH. He was born in Londonderry on June 1, 1918, a son of the late Neil E. and Fannie (Robie) Watts. Mr. Watts was an Army Air Corp veteran serving in China, Burma and the India Theater. Mr. Watts spent his entire career in banking at Indian Head Banks (NH Bankshares), starting at a beginners level part time in 1934, working his way up to president of the Keene National Bank. He retired as a senior vice president of the Nashua branch where he had started as an errand boy. During his banking career, he was active in community affairs and served as chairman of the Gregg Free Library Board for many years. Mr. Watts was instrumental in the organization and building of the Wilton-Lyndeborough High School. He was a member of the Wilton School Board and the Wilton-Lyndeborough School Board for over 30 years. He served in many other community activities, including the Budget Committee, the Trustee of Trust Funds and the Boy’s and Girl’s Scouts. During retirement, he taught Economics, Principles of Banking, and other business subjects at Daniel Webster College and NH Technical Institute. His church activities included singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school at the Londonderry Presbyterian Church. He also taught Sunday school and was a vestryman at All Saints Episcopal Church in Peterborough. He later participated in the organization and building of St. Luke Anglican Church in Amherst, NH, serving as it’s first treasurer for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Vernal Watts of Nashua, one daughter, Rhonda Hettinger of Wilton, NH, one son, Neil Watts of Chelsea, MA, two sisters, Phyllis Holton of Londonderry, Shirley Gilcreast of Candia, several nieces and nephews.
There were no calling hours. Following cremation, a memorial service was held on Sunday, February 12, 2006 at 2:00 PM at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 3 Limbo Lane, Amherst, NH 03031. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Anglican Church.
