Valerie J. Spongberg, age 65, of Plainville, formerly of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, February 21, 2020.
Born in Medford, MA on February 27, 1954, she was a daughter of Barbara A. (Lantagne) Bertone of Reading and the late Steve M. Spongberg.
Valerie grew up in Medford, Melrose and Malden and was a 1972 graduate of Malden High School. She had made her home in Plainville for the past 6 ½ years and was a former resident of Mansfield.
Prior to retiring, she had worked at OneBeacon in Canton. She retired as a software programmer, following a career of forty-six years of dedicated service to the company.
Valerie attended services at the Fellowship in Easton and was a former member at the former Mansfield United Methodist Church where she also served as a former board member and treasurer. She was also a member of the Mansfield Historical Society and gladly gave tours at the historic Fisher-Richardson House on Willow Street in Mansfield.
Valerie’s family and valued friends were truly the focal point of her life. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, reading and attending community theatres.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her devoted and loving daughter Sonya R. Spongberg of Plainville. She was the dear sister of Shirley A. Lamarre of North Carolina, Nancy M. Smith of New Hampshire, Donna S. Cantillo of New Hampshire, Robert A. Spongberg of Dennis, MA and the late Steve R. Spongberg and Donald W. Spongberg. She is also survived by several generations of cherished nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a service in celebration of her life on Friday, February 28th at 11:00 A.M. at the Fellowship, 604 Foundry St., Easton. Burial will be private.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 27th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
