Henry L. Mathis, 93, formerly of Derry, NH died Tuesday February 18, 2020 at the NH Veteran’s Home, Tilton, NH. Henry was born in Albany, GA on June 10, 1926, a son of the late Neal and Lula Mathis. He served with the US Navy during WWII, and was a former member of the American Legion Lester Chase Post #9 in Derry. Henry retired from the VA Medical Center in Boston, MA where he worked for 22 years. Henry was a longtime member of the Community Church in Milton, NH and the First Baptist Church of Derry. He was a member of AA with 50 + years of sobriety.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Staufenberg of Greenbackville, VA, two sons, Christopher Mathis of Milford, NH, and Timothy Mathis of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, four step-kids, Danny, Jackie, Willy, and Debbie, several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and his wife, Pauline O’Neil of Manchester, NH.
Calling hours were held on Monday February 24, 2020 from 9 – 11 am in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A funeral service followed at 11:00am in the funeral home. Burial with military honors was in Forest Hill Cemetery, E. Derry. Donations in his memory may be made to the NH Veteran’s Home, 139 Winter St., Tilton, NH 03276.
