Barbara Ann (Constantine) Nobrega, 85, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 16, 2020 surrounded by her family after courageously fighting a long illness.
A lifelong resident of the city of New Bedford, she was the daughter of Jennie and Charles Constantine and the wife of the late Joaquim "Jack" Nobrega.
A graduate of New Bedford High School and Cape Cod School of Nursing, Barbara worked many years as a nurse for Dr. Paul Chervinsky.
She was a long-standing member of the Catholic Woman's Club of New Bedford, and also served as its President for a number of years.
An avid gardener and golfer, Barbara enjoyed being outside and belonged to the Country Club of New Bedford and Reservation Golf Club.
Barbara was a woman of great faith and a devout Catholic. She was a family woman and cherished most her three grandsons, who knew her as Sittoo, and her many nieces and nephews. Some of her best memories include watching her grandsons grow up, making frequent visits to places like the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Buttonwood Park, and their many sporting events. Barbara was also able to witness the birth of her great-granddaughter, Rosalie S. Nobrega, whom she loved dearly.
She is survived by her son, David and daughter-in-law, Shannon of Marion, her grandson Nicholas of Marion, twin grandsons Christopher of Columbus, GA, and Patrick and his wife Molly of New Bedford and their daughter Rosalie, her sister, Theresa Fay of West Palm Beach, FL, and an extended family of many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her infant son, Paul, and her siblings, Dr. David Constantine, George Constantine, Habib Constantine, Louis Constantine, Patrick Constantine, Mary Saba, and Phoebe Assiff.
The family would like to offer their sincere gratitude to Dr. Elliot Anderson and the staff at St. Anne's Regional Cancer Center in Dartmouth for their extraordinary kindness and care over the course of her illness.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday February 21st at 9 AM in Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 121 Mount Pleasant St., New Bedford. Private burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Visiting hours will be on Thursday February 20th from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
