Jules M. Avila, 94 of Acushnet died February 15, 2020 at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Doris M. (Richard) Avila.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Jules S. and Laura (Mello) Avila, he lived in Fairhaven and Acushnet most of his life.
Mr. Avila was formerly employed as a commercial fisherman out of the port of New Bedford and was the captain and owner of the scalloper F/V Doris A.
He was a member of the Tuttle Veterans of Foreign Wars and the New Bedford Fishermans Retiree Club. Mr. Avila served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the Campaigns of the Rhineland, and the Battle of the Bulge receiving 2 bronze service stars. He was an avid bowler.
Jules was also known as the "Chowder Man." He made chowder to give away to family, friends and strangers. He loved playing the lottery and going to Foxwoods.
Survivors include his son, Jules M. Avila, Jr. and his wife Loretta of Dartmouth; a daughter, Elaine Tetreault of Acushnet; 4 grandchildren, Russell Tetreault, Jr., and his wife Sherri of Fairhaven, Dr. Jules Tetreault and his wife Heather of Connecticut, Sherrylynn Boucher and her husband Christopher and Julie Anne Dugan, all of Fairhaven; and 7 great-grandchildren, Nicole, Bethany, Olivia and Ryan Tetreault, Brooke and Braley Boucher and Jesslynn Dugan.
He was the father of the late Wayne Avila, father-in-law of the late Russell Tetreault and the brother of the late Gilbert Avila, Laura Rose and Dee Bolger.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Thursday, February 20th at 10:30 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church at 11:30 AM. Entombment will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, February 19th from 5-8 PM. Flowers are acceptable or remembrances may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
