Russell D. Horn, 55, of Fairhaven passed away Monday January 27, 2020 after his five year long courageous battle with occupational cancer, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was the husband of Joyce A. (Smith) Horn.
Born in New Bedford, the son of Maureen K. (Gendron) Horn and the late George N. Horn, Jr., he lived in Fairhaven for most of his life. He was a graduate of Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School and attended Bristol Community College.
Russ was a firefighter for the City of New Bedford for 30 years until his retirement in 2017. Despite having occupational cancer Russell would say, "I'd do it all again." Russell was the bravest of brave on and off duty. One of his mantras was, "Never give up never give in."
Russell loved spending time with his loving wife, two daughters, and his grandson Nash, who was the light of his life. Russ enjoyed vacationing, camping, and road trips. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman. He always looked forward to his annual salmon fishing trips with family and friends. He was a life time member of the Fin, Fur, and Feather Club of Mattapoisett.
He is survived by wife, Joyce; his mother, Maureen and her husband Brian; two daughters, Shannon Coutu and her husband Ryan, and Paige Horn; his siblings, George Horn and his wife Mary-Beth and Jodi-Ann Augustine and her husband Jerel; his grandson, Nash Russell Coutu; his mother-in-law, Janice Smith; his brother-in-law, Michael Smith; and his nieces and nephews, George Horn, Eric Horn, Britney Horn, Samantha Bradshaw, Jake Bradshaw, and Matt Dubois.
His Funeral will be held on Friday January 31, 2020 at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 11 AM. Visiting hours will be on Thursday January 30, 2020 from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
