Robert A. Makin, 85 of Dartmouth died peacefully January 17, 2020 surrounded by family.
He was the devoted husband of the late Anne M. (Mahoney) Makin.
Born in Dartmouth, son of the late Thomas M. and Mary F. (Fanning) Makin, he lived in New Bedford and South Dartmouth most of his life.
He was a partner at the Humphrey, Covill & Coleman Insurance Agency for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Makin was a communicant of St. Mary's Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was active with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, serving as president for many years.
He was a graduate of Georgetown University, class of 1955. Commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force, he was stationed in Tucson, AZ.
Mr. Makin enjoyed volunteering as a poll worker and warden on election day. He was a member on the New Bedford Industrial Foundation for 35 years and was an active member in the Kiwanis Club for 25 years. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Country Club of New Bedford for 65 years.
Survivors include his two sons, Thomas A. Makin and his wife Elizabeth of East Greenwich, RI and Andrew R. Makin and his wife Marci of Fairfax, VA; a daughter, Elizabeth Parker and her husband John of Ada, MI; a sister, Patricia Healey of Fall River and Westport; dear friend, Victoria Graham of South Dartmouth; and seven grandchildren, Tommy Makin, Sister Anna Josephine, Patrick Makin, Madeline Parker, Jack Parker, Peter Makin and William Makin.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Wednesday, January 22nd at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth at 10 AM. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, January 21st from 4-8 PM.
