WEBSTER – Albert G. Chlapowski, 89, died Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at home after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Alice (Yassu) Chlapowski; 4 children, Albert G. Chlapowski, Jr. and his wife Sonnie, Jean E. Piechocki and her husband Michael, Paul D. Chlapowski and his wife Jacque, and Matthew J. Chlapowski; 7 grandchildren, Albert, Stephen, Julie, Morgan, Zachary, Brandon and Kara; a brother, Frank Chlapowski and his wife Susan; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
He was born on November 2, 1930 in Dudley, a son of Albert and Florence E. (Leduc) Chlapowski and lived in Webster most of his life. When he resided in Newport, RI he attended and graduated from De La Salle Academy and later earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Seton Hall University in S. Orange, NJ.
He was a proud United States Navy veteran, serving on the destroyer USS Charles P. Cecil during the Korean War. He enjoyed attending annual reunions with his shipmates over the years. He was a member of the Webster-Dudley American Legion Post #184, the Polish American Veterans and the “Tin Can Sailors” a national organization.
Mr. Chlapowski worked in banking all his life. He was a financial officer and manager at different banks in the area, retiring from Fleet Bank. He was a member and two-term chairman of the Board of Directors of Webster First Federal Credit Union.
He was an active member of Saint Joseph Basilica and volunteered to work its yearly festivals for many years as the finance officer. He served on the parish council and once was the chairman of stewardship. He was a member of the Auburn-Webster Lodge of Elks #2118 and also a member and past King Lion of the Sturbridge Lions Club. At one time he was involved in the United Way of Webster & Dudley as a director. He was a member and past president of the former Exchange Club.
His funeral will be held Monday, January 6, from the Sitkowski, Malboeuf & Hickey Funeral Home, 340 School Street, with a Mass at 11:00 AM in Saint Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb Street. Burial will be in Saint Joseph Garden of Peace, with military honors provided by the Webster-Dudley Veterans Council. Visiting hours will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday, January 5, in the funeral home.
