Helen M. Thomae,99,of Norton died on Thursday January 26,2006 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro,MA
Born in Attleboro,MA on July 16,1906 she was a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Carl) Thomae.
She was educated in Attleboro Schools and was a graduate of The Deaconess School of Nursing in Boston. During WWII she served as a Nurse in the United States Army from 1942-1946 and was discharged with the rank of Captain. In 1949 she was promoted to the rank of Major and in 1962 was discharged from The Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During WWII she was the chief nurse at a 250-bed hospital in Suffolk County,England where many soldiers were treated after the D-Day invasion. At the time of her discharge she was one of only five Lieutenant Colonel Nurses in The U.S. Army. Thru out her career she worked as a pubic nurse in Maine,Georgia and Boston and retired in 1972 from The V.A. out patient clinic in Boston.
She was a member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Norton. She formerly served on the board of directors at The Daggett-Crandall Newcomb Home in Norton. She was a member of The Eastern Star, The Norton Grange and volunteered her time at The Attleboro Mental Health Center. Along with late father she was a participating member of The American Kennel Club. She had lived in Norton for the past 68 years and had formerly made her home in Boston and Attleboro.
She was the sister of the late Charles G. Thomae, Herbert L. Thomae, Florence R. Colmetz and Marion L. Horton. Helen is survived by her many nieces and nephews.
Her memorial service,to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday January 31st at 11:00 A.M. at The Trinitarian Congregational Church, East Main and Pine Streets, Norton. Private burial will be at a later date at The Norton Common Cemetery in Norton.
