Obituary

Joy Elizabeth Ivey Hobbs, 66, of the Lands Crossing community in Irwin County, Georgia, went to her Heavenly home on Sunday, November 17, 2019, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia surrounded by her loving husband, children, and grandchildren. She fought a long, hard fight and is now healed.

A celebration to honor and remember the life she lived will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, November 21, 2019, at Rebecca Baptist Church in Rebecca, with Bro. Eric Smith and Bro. Rex Johnson officiating. The committal service will follow in Big Creek Cemetery in Irwin County, Georgia. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Mrs. Hobbs was born May 31, 1953, in Turner County, Georgia, to the late Jack Watson, Sr. & Annie Ruth Williamson Ivey. She was a 1971 graduate of Turner County High School.

In Christian love, she found great JOY in helping others in so many ways. After years away, she returned to her home church, where she was raised and married Wayne on July 9th, 1971. Mrs. Hobbs was a very active member of Rebecca Baptist Church where she was honored to be a Deacon's wife, participated in the Woman's Missionary Union, assisted with Vacation Bible School and helped coordinate the shoebox ministry. Without many knowing who, she humbly ministered to many church and community members, family and friends with cards and special notes of encouragement on behalf of the church. She always wrote and kept up with family and friends, no matter the distance. Throughout the years of her and Wayne raising their children in church, she was the Sunday School Treasurer and Vacation Bible School Director at Big Creek Baptist Church.

Always having a way with words, she wrote “News from the Neighbors” for The Ocilla Star for many years. She volunteered at blood drives for the American Red Cross and worked the elections at the Lands Crossing and Irwinville precincts. She was honored to be a caregiver to her Mama during an extended illness the last two years of Mrs. Ivey’s life.

After starting their family, Mrs. Hobbs stayed home to raise their children and later enjoyed being promoted to "Mimi". She had the privilege of keeping their grandbabies throughout their early school years and then running the roads helping get them wherever they needed to be or anywhere they could talk her in to going.

Dedicated to each other since the age of 17, she had the love of her life constantly by her side as they built a wonderful life. She is survived by her loving husband of more than 48 years, Thomas "Wayne" Hobbs, Sr. of Lands Crossing; their four children and their spouses: Elizabeth "Michelle" Hobbs Stone & Walt of West Berrien, Thomas Wayne Hobbs Jr. "Tommy" & Wendy Hobbs of Lands Crossing, "Beverly" Jayne Hobbs Hall & Jay of Waterloo, and "Amanda" Renae Hobbs of Waterloo; her grandchildren: Logan Stone, Lindsey Stone, Brannon Douglas, Natalie Hobbs, Waylon Hobbs, Tucker Hall, Turner Hall, and Parker Hobbs; siblings: Donna Faye Thompson, Richard Ivey & Faye, and Jackie Ivey; her mother-in-law, Betty Jean Hobbs of Lands Crossing; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Lunsford of Savannah; a brother-in-law: Greg Hobbs & Susan of Lands Crossing; as well as several loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Parker’s Daddy, Pete Giannars III; her father-in-law, Thomas Monroe Hobbs; brother-in-laws, Ray Lunsford and Johnny Thompson; and a sister-in-law, Ginger Ivey.

Several of her nephews and her 5 grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be sent to Rebecca Baptist Church WMU, P.O. Box 57, Rebecca, Georgia 31783 or The Jeffrey Vaden Chavis House, 1109 Medical Center Drive #6, Augusta, Georgia 30909 in memory of JOY.

The family is gathering at Beverly & Jay's at 323 Pataula Road, Chula, and would love for anyone that wishes to come and visit.
