NEW BEDFORD — Grace Ellen (Knowlton) MacGowan Jones , 92, of Fairhaven died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Taber Nursing Home.
Born in Franklin, she was the daughter of Charles W. and Ethel Maude (MacPherson) Knowlton. She graduated from Fairhaven High School, where she later taught home economics. She also attended the Mass. College of Art in Boston.
On June 17, 1933, she married Elmer Allison MacGowan Jr. in New York City. They settled in Fairhaven, and he died Oct. 9, 1946. She then married J. Edwin Jones Jr., in November 1947 in Fairhaven; he died Oct. 19, 1975.
She was the manager of the book store at the Swain School of Design for many years, and also a sales associate at Cushing & Company, both in New Bedford.
Mrs. Jones served on the board of directors of Bradford-Russell House and was a member of the Colonial Club, both in Fairhaven.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Akerley (MacGowan) Lovett and Nina MacPherson Jones-Bonnoyer; three sons, Jonathan Carter MacGowan, J. Edwin Jones III and Charles MacKenzie Jones; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a nephew and nieces.
Her graveside memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2006, in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven, Ma.
