Obituary

Joseph Moniz III, 75, of Acushnet and Fort Myers, FL passed away unexpectedly on Saturday October 26, 2019. He was the son of the late Joseph and Alice (Sylvia) Moniz.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Leslie; his daughters, Kicia Furtado and Kelly Thomas and her husband Michael; his son, Christopher Blumlo and his wife Juliane; six grandsons, P.J., Josh, and Timmy Mattos, Jeremy Furtado and his wife Lauren, Justin and Jared Furtado; two granddaughters, Alexa and Emma Blumlo; and two great-grandchildren, Brayden Mattos and Lyla Furtado. He was the brother of Kathleen Mello and the late Richard Moniz. He is also survived by his cousin Frank Angelo and his wife Cathy who was like a brother to him.

Joe served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. John King. After his discharge, he joined the New Bedford Police Department as a police officer where he served in various capacities until his retirement in 1999. In 2002 he completed the U.S. Coast Guard course and received his captain’s license. He worked for 11 years for the Key West Express and most recently for the Block Island Ferry. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Whaling City Golf Course in New Bedford and the San Carlos Golf Course in Florida. He was happiest when he was on the water or the golf course.

In accordance with his wishes, he was cremated. A Memorial Service will be held at the Seamen’s Bethel, 15 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford at a date and time yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
