Janice Louise Mary (Malames) Mathews, 78, of Derry, NH, died Saturday, October 26, 2019, in Parkland Medical Center, Derry from a prolonged illness. She received communion and last rites on October 25th at Parkland. Janice was born in Boston, MA on October 19, 1941, the daughter of Nicholas J. and Lucille (Chausse) Malames. She grew up in Brighton, MA and graduated from Saint Columbkille's High School in 1961. She attended Boston College.
She began work at US Steel and then with Honeywell, Inc. She married Gary Scott Mathews on June 12, 1972. In August of 1972, they moved to their present residence in Derry. She gave birth to their son, James Malames Mathews, on August 26, 1972.
She began her career in Derry with her own business, Jan's Silk and Dry Flowers and did the flowers for a contestant in the Miss NH Teenager Pageant. Later she worked at Gibbs at the older station at Hood Plaza in Derry as Manager. She was later promoted to Assistant Regional Manager and managed Gibbs's largest station in Wilmington, MA until failing health forced her into an early retirement.
She was active in the Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Derry and was a member of the Church's knitting circle. She was also active in Cub Scout Pack 141 in Derry.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Scott Mathews; son, James Malames Mathews; granddaughter, Madison Olivia Mathews; two sisters Diane Murphy and Francis Gorman; brother-in-law Kenneth Gorman, and her sister-in-law, Eileen Malames.
Following cremation, a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 10:30am in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, 26 Crystal Ave., Derry. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, that donations in Janice's name be sent to the Saint Thomas Aquinas Church, 3 Moody Street, Derry, NH 03038. Friends and family will remember her in their prayers. The Peabody Funeral Homes & Crematorium assisted the family with arrangements.
