Donald Soper, Retired Salem Police Officer, 95, of Lynn, passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side on Sunday, October 6, 2019. He was the loving husband of Marion E. (Coombs) Soper with whom he would have shared their 39th year of marriage this week.
Born and raised in Salem he was the son of the late J. Ray and Edith G. (Singer) Soper. He joined the Navy at 17 to serve in World War II and later reenlisted to serve in Korea, serving a total of 12 years. Don first worked for H.P. Hood dairy and later for ADT in security systems. In 1954 he became a Reserve Police Officer and in 1962 became a full time member of the Salem Police Department. He and Marion married in 1981 and following his retirement in 1988 the couple became Snow Birds spending their winters in Port Charlotte, FL and summers on the North Shore.
Don loved his family and sports. In his younger years he played base ball and soft ball for several teams including Bernard’s Jewelers and the Mets of the Willows. He was a huge fan of the Sox, Pats and Bruins. Don was an excellent skier and had the most fun teaching his young family to ski. In later years he was an enthusiastic fan of his grandkids sporting events. He will missed by many.
In addition to his wife Marion, he is survived by his children; Donald Soper and his wife Maria of Fort Meyers, FL, Martha Tremblay and her husband John of the Villages, FL, Judith Moran and her husband Richard of Newburyport, Doreen Fitts of Beverly, Roger ‘Rick’ LeClerc and his wife Valerie of Salem and Shirley Ann Belisle and her husband Robert, Jr. of Bedford. He also leaves his grandchildren Matthew Moran, Douglas Moran, Andrew LeClerc, Danielle Siegal, Robert Belisle and Tiffany Johnson, as well as 11 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Ruth Raymond, J. Ray Soper, Erle Soper and Virginia Lavoie.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St., Salem, MA [ Route 114 / 1-A ] Salem on Thursday, October 10, 2019 from 2:00 to 5:45 P.M. to be followed by his funeral service in the funeral home at 6:00 P.M . which will be followed by Military Honors.
