Mildred McEwen Campbell, 90, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Tuesday, October 1, 2019.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Friday, October 4, 2019, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Charlie Solomon officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Thursday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Mildred was born November 1, 1928, in Franklin County, Alabama, to the late Jimmie & Libby McGuire Arthur. She moved to Fitzgerald with her family at the age of 8. She was attending Lynnwood School when it burned and remembered attending school temporarily at another location and having recess in the streets. She was a graduate of Fitzgerald High School. Mrs. Mildred worked as a telephone operator for GTE and was a homemaker. She was a substitute teacher and paraprofessional at Lynnwood School. She began attending Arbor Baptist Church when it was where Arbor Cemetery still exists. Sunday school was held behind the wooden building in a boxcar. She could also recall women handing bricks to the men as the church building was built on Merrimac Drive. She was very active in the children’s department having taught Sunday school and served as secretary and director of the department. She always enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School and singing in the choir. In her later years, she was active in the senior adult ministry.
She is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Linda & Kenneth Futch, Sheila & Charlie Solomon, Rita & Alan Petrie, and Marcia & Eddie Benford, all of Fitzgerald; two nieces whom she raised as daughters: Janet & Mark Cooley of Warner Robins and Kay & Gary Moran of Toney, Alabama; grandchildren: Wayne Futch, Tim & Ann Futch, Gina & Lee Clark, Andy & Angela Solomon, Glynn & Brandi Petrie, and Curt & Katie Petrie; 12 great-grandchildren; three step-children: James & Gail Campbell of Fitzgerald, Roy Campbell of Phoenix, Arizonia and Betty & Greg Mercier of Fitzgerald; four step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren and two sisters: Geraldine Camp of Loganville and Marjorie Leonhardt of Ocilla. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Luther James McEwen and J.C. Campbell.
