Joseph W. "Uncle Joe" Hicks, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Friday, September 27, 2019. He was 90 years of age.
Joe was born in Boston on June 14, 1929, a son of the late William and Sadie Hicks. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and attended Charlestown High School. Joe enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. on August 13, 1946 and served his country with pride and courage during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on August 12, 1951 with the rank of Sergeant. Joe worked as a custodian for the Federal Judges in the John W. McCormack State Office Building until his retirement after 30 years. Joe was an avid reader who kept a large stockpile of books. He loved St. Francis De Sales Church and walking around Charlestown. Joe was a very generous man willing to help out anyone in need and would often hand out money to people on his walks asking them to play the lottery for him.
Joe is the loving son of the late William and Sadie Hicks. He is the beloved brother of Janice Lundy Nardone, Cheryl Ducette, and the late Ruth McKillop. He is the blood relative of the late John V. Ward, Francis X. Ward, James J. Ward, Marie Ward Giannetto, Margaret Doe, and Helen McComiskey. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joe's Funeral on Wednesday October 2, 2019 at 10 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church at 11 A.M. His burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. His visiting hours will be on Tuesday October 1, 2019 from 4 to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
