Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Thomas J. Garvey, 72, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, September 26, 2019. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Springfield on November 7, 1946, a beloved son of the late Thomas D. Garvey and Christine M. (Murphy) Garvey. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from the former Springfield Trade High School and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Tom was a 35 year member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 404 and was employed for over 30 years by the United Parcel Service in West Springfield. Tom was a devoted sports fan and loved watching and cheering his favorite teams, the New York Yankees, New York Giants and the Philadelphia Flyers. Tom was well known for his Irish wit and was always ready to offer some humor and good advice to his family and his many friends. Most of all he was a devoted son, brother, uncle and friend. Active in his Catholic faith, he was a longtime communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church and currently a communicant of Mary, Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving brother, Kevin Matthew Garvey who was Called Home on January 9, 1951. He leaves his devoted sisters, Kathleen M. “Kathi” Tshonas and her husband, John, of Brewster, MA and MaryLou Garvey of Springfield; his favorite niece, Kathleen M. Garvey of Chicopee; his cherished nephew, Thomas J. Garvey of Springfield; his dear aunt, Gloria Garvey of Agawam; and his dear cousins and countless friends. His relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Friday morning, October 4, 2019 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107 which will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield. His burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. His family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 or to the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, PO Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101-6307.
