Judith M. Fernandes, 89, of Worcester, formerly of New Bedford, passed away Thursday September 19, 2019 after a long illness.
Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Rose (Babbitt) Fernandes, she was raised in Wareham and lived in New Bedford and Brockton before moving to Worcester 10 years ago.
Judy was a graduate of Holy Family High School, the New Bedford Textile Institute, and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked as a registered nurse at St. Luke's Hospital, St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Brockton VA Hospital.
During the Korean War, she served as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army, having been stationed in Germany.
She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and listening to classical music.
She is survived by three sisters, Olga Bence Williams of New Bedford, Irene Emerson of Chicago, IL, and Elizabeth Kinder of Dartmouth; her Godson, Melvin Bence, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Henry, Daniel, Belmiro, and Joseph H. Fernandes, Jr., and Godmother of the late Timothy Evans Kinder.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday September 25, 2019 at 11:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, with visitation prior from 10:30-11:30 AM.
