Obituary

HAMPDEN - Harold W.B. Barnes, 87, of Hampden and a longtime resident of Baystate Place in Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in East Longmeadow on August 11, 1932, the beloved son of the late Harold B. Barnes and Doris F. (Dion) Barnes. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from the former Springfield Trade High School and lived in Springfield for many years before moving to Hampden in 2017. He was employed as a machinist for 17 years at the former Package Machinery in East Longmeadow and retired in 1990. Previously, he worked at the former Bigelow Sanford Company in Enfield, CT and the Springfield Armory. He was a communicant of the former Saint Joseph Church in Springfield. During his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and watching his beloved Boston Red Sox. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and his friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, June D. (Baribeau) Barnes who was Called Home on March 19, 2013. They were married on July 8, 1954 and were blessed with over 58 years of happiness together. He leaves his five loving children, Gordon W. Barnes of South Hadley, Harold W.B. Barnes, Jr. and his wife, Ester, of San Lorenzo, CA, Mark A. Barnes and his wife, Laura, of Springfield, Anita M. Servantez and her husband, Phillip, of Somers, CT and Wayne B. Barnes and his wife, Tamara, of Chicopee; his many cherished grandchildren and great- grandchildren; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended family members. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his loving son, Richard H. Barnes who was Called Home on March 13, 1997; his dear sister and brother-in-law, Grace J. Askwith who was Called Home on May 3, 2016 and her husband, William A. Askwith who was Called Home on December 17, 2015; and his dear brother, Francis Barnes. His funeral will be held on Monday morning, September 23, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. His family will receive friends on Sunday, September 22, 2019 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. For those who prefer, his family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Springfield Unit, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
