Obituary

SPRINGFIELD ~ Terry Anthony Aberdale, 77, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, August 29, 2019. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on July 23, 1942, a beloved son of the late Joseph J. and Helen M. (Zaranek) Aberdale. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from Springfield Technical High School and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He furthered his education and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston. He later received a Master of Science Degree in Education with a focus on Abnormal Psychology from Springfield College. Terry began working at his uncle’s service station and later worked as a Pharmacist at several area pharmacies in Springfield. Terry went on to become the Director of Medical Services for the Hampden County Sheriff's Department at the former York Street Jail in Springfield, the Hampden County House of Corrections in Ludlow and several additional local county houses of correction, retiring in 2002. During his employment with the Hampden County Sheriff's Department, he was appointed as the Commander of their Criminal Investigations Unit. Terry’s work with the Sheriff’s Department led to his assistance with the development of the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigative Unit with the Sheriff’s Department, the Massachusetts State Police and many local police departments. As an educator, Terry taught many Pharmacology, Psychology and Law Enforcement courses at Western New England College in Springfield and his alma maters of Springfield College and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Active in his community, he was a member of the Indian Orchard Council 160 Knights of Columbus and the Hungry Hill Neighborhood Council, both in Springfield. Terry was also a member of the Western Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association and had served as a former member of the Springfield Police Review Commission. A devout Catholic, Terry was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church and currently was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, both in Springfield where he served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He helped to establish the Western Massachusetts Newman Club which aided local Catholic college students with counseling and daily Masses on campus. He was an avid baseball fan, enjoyed playing with and spending time with his grandsons and cherished many wonderful family Cape Cod vacations. Above all, Terry loved spending time with his family and his many friends. Terry leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Barbara B. (Baldyga) Aberdale. They were married on August 29, 1970 at the former Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 49 years of happiness together. Terry also leaves his two loving daughters, Annette D. Kendra and her husband, Richard, of Chicopee and Andrea B. Aberdale-Smith and her husband, John Smith, of Springfield; his three cherished grandsons, Collin and Nicholas Kendra and Alex Aberdale; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, colleagues and extended members of the Aberdale and Baldyga families. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brother and sister-in-law, Joseph W. Aberdale and his wife, Dolores; and his dear sister, Lorraine Aberdale. His Funeral will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For those who prefer and in lieu of flowers, Terry’s family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic, Baystate Heart and Vascular Program, Baystate Health Foundation, 280 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01199.
