E. Freetown - Edith (Duarte) Costa, age 84, of East Freetown passed away peacefully on August 22, 2019 at Care One Rehabilitation in New Bedford.
Mrs. Costa was born on February 25, 1935 in New Bedford. She was the daughter of John G, and Matilda (Pina) Duarte. She was precdeceased by siblings Mary (Delgado) Oliver, Alice (Delgado) Harris, William Delgado, Joseph Duarte, John Duarte, Marie (Duarte) Lopes, Barbara (Duarte) Pires, Bernice Duarte, Joaquim Duarte, Matilda (Duarte) Perry, Dorothy Woodland, Pauline Watkins and Dominga Soares.
She is survived by her husband John of 64 years, her son Joel Costa, her daughter Janet Costa Bates and her husband Roy Bates, two grandsons, Michael and Christian Bates and two great grandchildren LeAnna Burr and Cameron Bates. She is also survived by her sister Eleanor ‘Bridget’ (Duarte) Vandiver, brother Robert Duarte as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to a loving family, she was also blessed to have a large and caring community of friends.
Mrs. Costa was a longtime employee of Alberox Corporation and in her spare time loved to travel with her husband John and their travel group ‘The Turtles.’ Her favorite trip was an Alaskan cruise. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mrs. Costa loved her family and friends and was loved by all in return. She will be greatly missed.
Her Funeral will be held on Monday, August 26th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, August 25th from 4-8 PM.
