Obituary

Alphonse W. Steinman, 86, of Pleasant View Avenue, Smithfield, entered into his eternal life on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15, 2019 at Kent Regency in Warwick. He was the beloved husband of 51 years of the late Margaret Kathleen “Kathy” (Kavanaugh) Steinman who entered eternal life in 2010. Al was a blessing as a father, dear grandfather, beloved brother, treasured uncle, and trusted friend to so very many during his life. His kind and generous spirit was a joy to his caregivers in recent years. Al’s life was one of selflessness in action and he joyfully served others at all times. Al will be especially remembered for his great patience and his ability to be a calming influence during stressful times.

Born in St. Anthony, Missouri, he was a son of the late Barthol and Clara (Evers) Steinman. He had lived in Smithfield for eight years, and had made his home and raised his family in St. Louis, Missouri for nearly 50 years. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict.

Al retired as the Comptroller at Lambert International Airport in St. Louis and had also worked for the St. Louis Department of Health and Hospitals. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Saint Louis University in 1966. He was a member of St. Philip Parish in Greenville, RI and a former member of St. Benedicts in Warwick, RI. He was a parishioner of St. Gabriel Church, St. Raphael Church and Our Lady of Sorrows Church when he resided in Missouri. Al’s Catholic faith was the center of his life, and his deep relationship with Jesus sustained him and informed everything he did. Even as his disease progressed, Al would still recite prayers and sing songs in Latin while watching the Mass, so ingrained was his faith.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie Steinman King of Smithfield, his granddaughters: Georgia King of St. Louis, Virginia King and Carolina King, both of New York, NY, his loving sisters: Sr. Donna M. Steinman, F.S.M, Sr. Loreda Steinman, F.S.M. and Sr. Mary Evelyn Steinman, F.S.M., all of St. Louis, Missouri, and dear brother and sister in law, Thomas and Maureen Kavanaugh of St. Louis, Missouri. He was the brother of the late Mary Catherine Meyer and Edmund Steinman and brother in law of the late Rev. John Kavanaugh, S.J.

Al’s life will be celebrated at a Mass of Christian Burial held at St. Philip Church on Saturday, August 17 at 9:30 am, and he will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Warwick.
