SPRINGFIELD ~ Julio M. Sherry, 86, of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, August 8, 2019. He passed into Eternal Life at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family, his wonderful caregivers and his fellow comrades-in-arms. He was born in Plattsburg, New York on July 2, 1933, a beloved son of the late Joseph and Eva (Menard) Sherry. He had lived in Chicopee until 1964 before moving to East Springfield where he lived the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer during the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal. He was employed for 42 years at the Jahn Foundry in Springfield, retiring in 1998. Previously, he had worked at Production Pattern in Chicopee. He was a communicant of the former Saint Mary Church, now, Mary, Mother of Hope Church, in East Springfield. During his leisure time, he enjoyed sports, fishing, reading the newspaper, his daily coffee and especially loved sweets including cake and chocolate doughnuts. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Lorraine M. (Collis) Sherry whom he affectionately called “Skippy” and was Called Home on December 8, 2017. They were married on January 3, 1955 at the former Saint Mary Church in East Springfield and were blessed with over 62 years of happiness together. He leaves his devoted daughter and caregiver, Laurie L. Dupuis and her husband, Mike, of Springfield; his son, Paul A. Sherry and his wife, Cheryl, of Amherst; his four cherished grandchildren whom he adored and will deeply miss their “Grumpy”, Michael Dupuis and his wife, Bridget Barcomb-Dupuis of Springfield, Matthew Dupuis and his wife, Megan of Chicopee, and Kristin Smith and her husband, Calvin, and Ashley Miller and her husband, Nathan, all of Amherst; his cherished great-grandson, Logan Smith and the anticipated birth of his second great-grandson; his “great-fur grandbabies”, dogs Rocket and Tony; his two dear sisters-in-law, Katherine Sherry of West Springfield and Carol Sherry of Chicopee; his dear brother-in-law, Allan Jourdain of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, numerous friends and extended members of the Sherry family. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his two dear brothers, Emilio and Americo “Sonny” Sherry; and his five dear sisters, Shirley Sherry, Rita Marshall, Dorothy Bassilakis, Doris Bergeron and Claire Jourdain; and his beloved great granddog, Belle. Julio’s family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the entire staff at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke for their compassionate care of him during his time with them. His Funeral will be held on Friday, August 16, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, Springfield, MA 01104. His Burial with United States Army Military Honors will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, August 16, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to his Mass. His family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke Recreation Department, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
