CHICOPEE ~ Michael V. Goonan, 95, of the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, August 4, 2019. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Holyoke on July 13, 1924, a beloved son of the late Peter M. and Sarah A. (Murphy) Goonan. At the age of 5, his parents moved to Chicopee Falls where he lived for the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II with the Headquarters and Service Company 154th Engineer Combat Battalion and attained the rank of Technician Fourth Grade. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with One Bronze Service Arrowhead, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Bronze Service Star and the World War II Victory Medal. He was employed as a machinist for 38 years at Baystate Elevator Company in Springfield and retired in 1995. Active in his Catholic faith, he was a longtime communicant of the former Saint Patrick Church in Chicopee Falls and currently was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville. He was a member of the Pro-Life of Pioneer Valley and the Aldenville American Legion Post 337 in Chicopee. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Ann (Daly) Goonan. They were married on July 29, 1967 at Saint Mary Church in Westfield and were blessed with over 52 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving children, Judithann M. “Judy” Campbell of Springfield and Michael J. Goonan and his wife, Laurie, of Medfield; his two cherished grandchildren, Molly and Ryan Goonan, both of Medfield; his dear sister, Sister Mary of Fatima, SSJ, (in secular life Cecilia Goonan) of Holyoke; her dear sister-in-law, Mary Ann Goonan of Belchertown; his dear brother-in-law, John Daly and his wife, Jeanne Marie, of Silver Springs, MD; his dear cousin who was like a brother to him, James Shea of Westfield; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Goonan and Daly families. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving son-in-law, Robin L. “Rob” Campbell who was Called Home on April 10, 2019; his dear brother, John Goonan; and his two dear sisters, Nora Goonan and Sarah Theresa O’Brien and her husband, John. His Funeral will be held on Friday, August 9, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 7:45 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with United States Army Military Honors will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, August 8, 2019 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance of the funeral home are located at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
