John Theodore Simmons, Jr. 76, of Anderson died August 3, 2019, peacefully at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born October 17, 1942, in Anderson, the son of John and Esther (Janney) Simmons.
He served as a firefighter with Anderson Fire Department for 33 years before retiring in 2001. John worked also for Sam Price Builders for 45 years. He helped start the Fireman's Lodge, Madison County Federal Credit Union and the Fireman's Honor Guard. He was a member of Industry United Methodist Church in Muncie, IN.
John is survived by his wife of nearly 31 years, Maria (Davis) Simmons of Anderson whom he married September 2, 1988; two daughters, Gaynell (Mike) Mann of West Lafayette and Janet (Roger) Marshall of Lafayette; two sisters, Jane Simmons and Jean Simmons both of Anderson; six grandchildren, Sarah, Jeffery, Kiley, Preston, Garrett and Hudson.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Tom and Bea Carlisle; sister-in-law, Annette Black.
Services will be 2 p.m. on Friday August 9, 2019 at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Pastor Steve Graves of Industry United Methodist Church officiating.
Private burial of his cremated remains will be in East Maplewood Cemetery at a later time.
Visitation will be Friday from 12 noon until the service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
