John G. Duarte, Jr., 82, of Dartmouth passed away Wednesday July 31, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was the husband of Domingas (DaSilva) Duarte; they had been married for 48 years.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late John G. and Matilda (Pina) Duarte, he lived in Dartmouth for many years.
Mr. Duarte was formerly employed as a chief marine engineer for the City of New York Department of Transportation until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Domingas; four children, Maria Verissimo and her husband Jose of Dartmouth, Carlos Duarte of Dartmouth, Christina Panek and her husband Jacob of Fairhaven, and John Duarte of New Bedford; his siblings, Edith Costa of East Freetown, and Eleanor Vandiver and Robert Duarte, both of New Bedford; five grandchildren, Julian, Lucas, Allyson, Carina, and Jacinda; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Alice Harris, Barbara Pires, William Delgado, Joaquim Duarte, Dorothy Woodland, Pauline Watkins, Mary Oliver, Joseph Duarte, Dominga Soares, Matilda Perry, Bernice Duarte, and Marie Lopes.
His Funeral will be held on Monday August 5, 2019 at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday August 4, 2019 from 4-7 PM.
