Antone “Tony” Gomes, 91, of Fairhaven passed away Monday July 22, 2019. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Portway) Gomes.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Manuel Gomes Semiao and Olivia (Tavares) Semiao, he attended New Bedford public schools and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
Tony worked as a foreman at Alden Corrugated for many years until his retirement.
He was a volunteer for P.A.A.C.A. and the Whaling City Festival. In his younger years, he enjoyed quahogging, traveling – especially trips to Las Vegas, playing cards, and attending wrestling events.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Rebello and her partner Michael Mendes, who were his caregivers, and Brenda J. Gomes; five grandsons, Jamie and Joshua Rebello, Jason and Michael Fortin, and Brandon Pires; 11 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Lola Mach and her husband Ted, Ronald Semiao, Lionel Semiao, and Dolores Guillotte; his brothers-in-law, Alfred Portway and Robert Portway and his wife Marie; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Manuel Semiao, Mary Camara, Julia Benton, Jack Semiao, John Semiao, and baby Dolores Semiao, and his brother-in-law, Ernest Portway.
His Memorial Service will be held on Monday August 5, 2019 at 9 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Road, Route 6, Mattapoisett. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
