Obituary

James L. “Scoop” Simmons, 59, of New Bedford died July 11, 2019 unexpectedly at home. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Theodore and Tereather (Jefferson) Simmons

James lived in New Bedford most of his life and was raised in the United House of Prayer For All People.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his love of the Celtics, Cowboys and Red Sox. He also enjoyed playing softball in the Ben Rose League.

Survivors include his loving daughter, Shaunell Bulgar of New Bedford; his former companion, Nancy Bulgar of New Bedford; 3 brothers, Theodore Simmons and his wife Frieda of Belgium, Rodney Simmons and his wife Barbara of Washington, DC and Thomas Simmons of New Bedford; 3 sisters, Lorraine Simmons of Boston, Darlene Simmons of New Bedford, and Dinah Ferreira and her husband Michael of Fairhaven; 2 beloved grandchildren, Nazeah and Aydan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Marie Simmons and Dana Judd.

His visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 19th from 5-8 PM, with a prayer service at 7:30 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford.
