HOLDEN, MA: Ruth A. (Conrad) Stern, 93, formerly of Holden and Westfield, MA died peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2019 in Plainfield, Indiana.
She leaves a daughter, Kathryn Humphrey and her husband Thomas of Avon, Indiana; a sister, Rose I. Giammalvo of Fitchburg; two grandchildren, Andrea Thompson and Jacob Henshaw, both of Indiana; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her two sons, Michael Stern and Daniel Joseph Stern; two grandsons, Christopher Wood and Michael Stern; a sister, Barbara McCarthy and a brother, Peter R. Conrad, both of Worcester, MA.
She was born in Worcester and raised in Holden, daughter of the late Peter and Josephine Irene (LaPointe) Conrad. She was a 1944 graduate of Holden High School and studied nursing at New England Hospital for Women and Children through the Cadet Nurse Corp. After she married Harold Stern, she lived in Michigan, Missouri, Denver, Colorado, and Indiana before returning to Massachusetts. She lived in Westfield before moving back to Indiana several years ago, where she spent her last years in the loving care of her daughter Kathy.
Ruth worked as a registered nurse in several hospitals across the country until she retired. She was adept at making lasting friendships through church and her pursuit of wellness, fitness and care for the environment. She enjoyed traveling.
After cremation, a COMMITTAL SERVICE with Ruth’s ashes will be held at 12 NOON on WEDNESDAY, JULY 31st at Notre Dame Cemetery in Worcester.
