Barbara J. Kenefick died July 3 in Chicopee. She was born August 8, 1943 in Springfield, Mass., and lived all her life in Western Massachusetts. Her career path included working as a medical secretary and dental assistant, and later, working at MassMutual for 25 years, retiring as a second vice president and director of the Claims Department. After leaving MassMutual she worked part-time at Baystate Medical Center as director of the Patient Relations Department, where she had earlier volunteered. She was a natural athlete with a lifelong love for tennis as well as a strong affinity for golf. She also loved shopping with and for her grandchildren and vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard. She was a member of Sacred Heart church in Springfield. She was predeceased by her daughter, Cheryl Ann, who died in infancy, and by her brother, Richard, who died in 1998. Her husband, Austin W. Kenefick, survives her. She also leaves her son, Robert, and his wife, Susan, of Guilford, Conn. and three beloved grandchildren: Kierstyn, of Portland, Maine; Amanda, of Woburn, Mass.; and Ben, of Guilford. She also leaves her stepdaughter, Molly Kenefick, of Oakland, Calif. She is survived by two sisters: Beverly Lazzara Martin of Chicopee, and Catherine Swerdlick of Westerly, R. I. and Captiva, Fla., as well as her sister-in-law, Nancy Jamrog of South Hadley. Calling hours will be held on the morning of the funeral on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 from 9:00 – 10:30 AM in the Grise` Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee. A Mass of Christian Liturgy will follow in Sacred Heart Church at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to consider donating to a charity of their choice.
