Derrick E. Leighton, 62, of New Bedford died May 8, 2019 unexpectedly at home.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Mary J. (Duarte) Leighton and Maurice Baptiste, Sr.
Derrick was a graduate of New Bedford High School and received a degree in computer science from New England Tech.
He was formerly employed by Cornell-Dublier Electronics in New Bedford, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, DeMatteo Construction in Boston, and Mass. Bay Electric in East Boston until his retirement.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church.
Survivors include his son, Jared A. Leighton of New Bedford; his sisters, Donna Mederios of Wanchese, North Carolina, Cindy Offley of New Bedford, and Maureen Baptiste Munoz of Mesquite, Nevada; 17 nieces and nephews; four great-nieces and great-nephews; and several aunts and uncles.
He was the brother of the late Douglas Leighton, Maurice 'Sonny" Baptiste, Jr. and Julius 'Rico" Baptiste.
