SPRINGFIELD – Virginia R. “Ginny” (Tanguay) St. Pierre, 94, a former longtime resident of South Shore Drive in the East Forest Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. She passed into Eternal Life at The Landing at Laurel Lake in Lee, Massachusetts surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on June 16, 1924, a beloved daughter of the late Edgar and Viola (O’Connor) Tanguay. She was raised in Springfield, attended local schools and graduated in 1942 from the former Technical High School where she was the class Valedictorian. She later attended Cornell University and Ithaca College in New York and graduated in 1946 from the New England Institute of Embalming and Funeral Directing in Boston and became one of the first licensed female funeral directors in Massachusetts. In 1963, Virginia and her husband, George, embarked on a new venture and built a state of the art funeral home at 7 Chapin Terrace in the North End section of Springfield. In 1984, they purchased the former Robert Funeral Home in the Aldenville section of Chicopee. Virginia and George retired from the funeral business in 1992 to enjoy vacationing, skiing, golfing and spending time with their large family. Since 1968, they were summer residents of Dunes Park in Westerly, Rhode Island and in 1992, became full-time residents of Fort Pierce, Florida. While living in Florida, she was active in a tap dance group called “the Footnotes” where they competed and danced for the elderly. They returned to Springfield in March of 2013 and became residents of Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing. While a resident there, Ginny was the “life of the party”. Ginny was a former member of the Massachusetts Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors Association, Le Cercle des Dames Francais and the former French Club in Springfield. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George St. Pierre, Jr. who was Called Home on December 2, 2017. They were married on November 23, 1944 at the former Saint Joseph Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 73 years of happiness together. She leaves her eight loving children, Claire Tremblay of Springfield, Lorraine Libbey and her husband, Christopher, of New Richmond, WI, George St. Pierre, III and his wife, Barbara, of Palm Bay, FL, Paul St. Pierre and his partner, Barbara Main, of Palm Bay, FL, Mark St. Pierre and his wife, Tilda, of Kyle, SD, Richard St. Pierre and his wife, Shelly, of Steamboat Springs, CO, Cheryl St. Pierre-Sleboda and her husband, Bob Sleboda, of Housatonic, MA, and Don St. Pierre and his wife, Maria, of Sydney, Australia; her 16 cherished grandchildren; her 19 cherished great-grandchildren; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the St. Pierre and Tanguay families. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving son-in-law, Roger R. Tremblay and her loving sister, Pauline Vigneau. Her funeral will be held on Saturday morning, June 15, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at her funeral home, “GEORGE ST.
