Obituary

James Madison Montague, Jr., 75, of New Bedford died Saturday January 7, 2006 at the V.A. Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island after a brief illness. He was the husband of Dorothy L. (Campbell) Montague.

Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, the son of the late Ella (Bullard) and James M. Montague, Sr., he lived in New Bedford for many years.

He was an active member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, where he served as a trustee.

Mr. Montague served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years until his retirement in 1971.

He was a graduate of Hillside High School in Durham.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James M. Montague, III and his wife Nicole of New Bedford; two daughters, Beverly A. Montague and Elizabeth L. Roderick, and her husband Richard, all of New Bedford; a brother, Ben Earl Montague, of Baltimore, Maryland; a sister, Shirley Goode of Clinton, Maryland; three grandchildren, Patrice Roderick, Tregg Roderick, and Damien Montague; a great-granddaughter, Kendra Roderick; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Earl Madison Montague, and brother of the late Elsie Spivery and Doris Toler.

His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday January 11, 2006 at 10 AM in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 532 County St., New Bedford. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday January 10, 2006 from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Lung Association, One Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA 02346.
