CHICOPEE ~ Emma (Bernard) Lavallee, 100, of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Monday, May 20, 2019. She passed into Eternal Life at the Mont Marie Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and wonderful caregivers. She was born Marie Emma Bernard in Springfield on December 27, 1918, the beloved daughter of the late Paul O. Bernard and Exilda M. (Richard) Bernard. She was raised in West Springfield, graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield in 1937 and had lived in Holyoke before moving to Chicopee in 1976. She had worked as a sales clerk and cashier for over 20 years at the former Bradlees Department Store in West Springfield and retired in 1981. She previously worked at the former Poole’s Department Store in Springfield. Active in her Catholic faith, she was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee and also was a member of the Aldenville Seniors of the Church. She was also a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1459 in Springfield. During her leisure time, she spent many hours quilting, knitting, crocheting and cooking for her family. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Ovide A. Lavallee who was Called Home on January 21, 1991. They were married on September 4, 1939 at Saint Louis de France Church in West Springfield and were blessed with over 51 years of happiness together. She leaves her three loving children, Jeanne L. Lavallee of Westport, Suzanne E. Stebbins of Chicopee and Richard O. Lavallee and his wife, Cynthia, of Madison, AL; her two cherished grandchildren, Sherri L. Lynn and her husband, Matthew, of Madison, AL and Daniel E. Lavallee and his wife, Courtney, of Huntsville, AL; her three cherished great granddaughters, Emily and Allison Lynn and Anna Lavallee; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Lavallee and Bernard families. She will also be deeply missed by her favorite visiting dog, her pal “Shammie”. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving son, Robert P. Lavallee; her loving son-in-law, Donald L. Stebbins; her cherished infant grandson, David Patrick Stebbins; and her dear brother and sister-in-law, Gerard J. Bernard and his wife, Helen (Kennedy) Bernard. Her Funeral will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her Burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, May 23, 2019 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
