George Hoyt Helms, Sr., 78, of Brookfield passed away Monday, May 13, 2019, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. A private service and burial will be held for Mr. Helms at a later date. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 16, 2019, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Born August 26, 1940 in Dixon, Illinois, Mr. Helms was the son of the late Hoyt Helms and Helen Bradford Helms. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Jean Haven “The Pool Lady" Helms. He was owner and operator of the Pool Store in Tifton. He loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed Native American history and looking for arrowheads.
Mr. Helms is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Carl Henry Helms of Brookfield and George Hoyt Jr. and Nancy Helms of Lenox; two daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa Jean and Keith Futch of Eldorado and Buffy Jo and Larry Giles of Northeast, Maryland; his brothers and sisters, John Helms and Renona Browning, both of Illinois and Cherie Helms of Iowa; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Amber Nicole and Don Bruner of Brookfield, Ryan Clayton and Rachel Futch of Eldorado, Dustin Kyle and Terri Smith and Meagan Michelle and J. J. Scarberry, all of Perryville, Maryland, Zachary Tyler Simpson and Amanda Bennett of Parkton, Maryland, Jacob Christopher Helms of Lenox and Audra Delilah Futch of Eldorado; eight great-grandchildren, Adrien Bruner, Owen Bruner, Jared Bruner, Lexi Bruner, Logan Scarberry, Lane Simpson, Easton Smith and Allanna Burchett; and one great-great-grandchild, Amelia Grace Stalnaker.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Tift County Animal Shelter, 278 Georgia Highway 125 South, Tifton, GA 31794.
