Bertha “Bert” L. (Southworth) Twohig, age 95 of Brockton died April 30, 2019 at Good Samaritan Medical Center. She was the devoted wife of the late Leo M. Twohig. Bertha was born and raised in Brockton, a daughter of the late Richard and Mildred (Standish) Southworth and remained a lifelong resident of the city.
A 1941 graduate of Brockton High School, Bertha had worked for over 69 years in the shoe manufacturing industry. She had worked as a welter at Wind Innersole and as a bench worker at Foot Joy, both in Brockton. Bertha had been very active in the city shoe unions serving as president, secretary and treasurer for BSAC (Brotherhood of Shoe and Allied Craft) and the stitchers local at Foot Joy.
In her free time, Bertha enjoyed shopping, trips to the beach and horse races.
Bertha is survived by a nephew, Charles V. “Chuck” Southworth, Jr. and a niece, Debra A. Rose. She was the great aunt of Kenneth C. Southworth, Brian White, Jennifer White and the late Steven M. Southworth. She also leaves a great great nephew, Patrick White and a great great niece, Cassie White.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (rte. 123) Brockton on Saturday May 4, 2019 from 10am – 12:30pm with a funeral service at 12:30pm.
