Obituary

CHICOPEE ~ Albert F. “Al” Garrity, Sr., 91, a longtime resident of the Fairview section of Chicopee and a former winter resident of Flagler Beach, FL, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, April 25, 2019. He passed into Eternal Life at his daughter Sandy’s home in Rowe, MA surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born at home in the Aldenville section of Chicopee on February 26, 1928, a beloved son of the late James J. and Margaret (Ferrie) Garrity. He was raised in Aldenville, attended Chicopee High School and moved to Fairview in 1952. He served his country During World War II in the United States Navy aboard the USS Suwannee and attained the rank of Carpenter’s Mate Third Class. He received the American Area Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He was a member of the Chicopee Lodge of Elks No. 1849 and the Flagler Beach Knights of Columbus Council No. 10514. During his leisure time, Al enjoyed golfing and spending time with his lunch buddies. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and loved his many trips with his grandson and great-grandson to see them play. He also enjoyed ballroom dancing with his beloved late wife, Alice. Al was often seen driving around town with his beloved chihuahua, Beejou. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and many friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Alice C. (Lepine) Garrity who was Called Home on May 25, 2004. They were married at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee on October 19, 1946 and were blessed with over 57 years of happiness together. He leaves his five loving children, Sandra P. Daviau and her husband, Edward, of Rowe, Albert F. Garrity, Jr. of Onset, Patricia A. DelMonte and her husband, Daniel, of Chicopee, Kevin M. Garrity and his wife, Cheryl, of Granby and Brenda D. Garrity of Chicopee; his eight cherished grandchildren, Wayne Daviau, Scott Garrity, Traci Swiatlowski and her husband, Michael, Alissa Hanna and her husband, Joshua, Anthony DelMonte, Dr. Christina Bruner and her husband, David, Rory Garrity and Angela Ladue and her husband, Jason; his 13 cherished great-grandchildren, Casey, Cody, Courtney, Alicia, Jaiden, Gianna, Nathan, Joseph, Kinsley, Benjamin, Wesley, Jason and Aubrey; his two cherished great-great-grandsons, Ethan and Kaleb; his dear sister-in-law, Claire A. Kukla of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Garrity and Lepine families. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his cherished infant great-granddaughter, Nadia Jade; his six dear brothers, Thomas, James II, Joseph, John, Pete and Donald Garrity; and his two dear sisters, Margaret Panico and Marie Chandonette. His Funeral will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Burial with United States Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, May 2, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the Mass. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Franklin County Regional Dog Shelter, 10 Sandy Lane, Turners Falls, MA 01376.
