Barbara Ann Hughes, 62, of Abbeville, Georgia, passed away surrounded by her family, Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Saturday, April 27, 2019, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, with Pastor Larry Davis officiating. Debbie Fitzgerald will give a eulogy. Interment will follow in the Fitzgerald Family Cemetery in Wilcox County, Georgia. The family will receive friends Friday evening, April 26, 2019, from 6 PM until 8 PM, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Ms. Hughes was born January 16, 1957, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to the late John Newton Hughes, Sr. and the late Shirley Pike Hughes Howard. She was a member of the 1976 class of Fitzgerald High School. After high school she was a manager for Shop-N-Go, worked at Pic-N-Pay, and was a Quality Control Team Leader for Coachmen Industries for 30 years. She later worked as a security guard for Delphi and was co-owner and operator of Fitzgerald/Hughes Enterprises. Ms. Hughes also did contract work for FEMA and Homeland Security following natural disasters. She enjoyed spending time outdoors with her family and friends at the beach, grilling, golfing, fishing, hunting and spending time at the pool. She also enjoyed on-line shopping and spending time with her great nieces and nephews. Ms. Hughes attended Open Gates Ministry.
She is survived by her partner of 20 years, Debbie Fitzgerald of Abbeville; sisters: Anita Hughes Brown & Billy of Fitzgerald, Sylvia Hughes Jones & Ed of Piketon, Ohio and Jonnie Sue Hughes Wright of Fitzgerald; 12 nieces and nephews and 15 great nieces and nephews and her step-mother Sue Lee McGee of Fitzgerald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Newton Hughes, Jr. and a great nephew.
