Joseph Bakanauskas, Sr., age 72, of Norton, passed away from a heart attack on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of Lynn (Morris) Bakanauskas, to whom he was wed for forty-four years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted sons: Joseph Bakanauskas, Jr. of Norton and Robert Bakanauskas and his wife Audriane of Texas. He was cherished grandpa to Boden and Karina Bakanauskas.
Joe was born in Haverhill, MA on December 2, 1946 and was the loving son of the late Joseph and Ruth V. (Johnson) Bakanauskas. He moved to Ohio at an early age and at age sixteen, his family moved to Stratford, CT where he graduated from high school. He went to college at the University of Nebraska and received his Master of Science degree from the University of Connecticut in cell biology.
As a child in Ohio, Joe developed a love of the outdoors which continued his entire life. An avid fisherman, Joe traveled many places to try new rivers and streams. He was a man of many interests. Besides fishing and hunting, he was an accomplished tennis player, superb horseracing handicapper and great cook.
Joe lived in Norton for the past forty-three years. His professional career was at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he was the Radiation Safety Officer. His heart was always family, and he spent a lot with the Norton Boy Scouts, with his family playing tennis and spending wonderful vacations throughout the United States.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday, April 27th from 2:00-4:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.
A funeral service will be held at the conclusion of visitation at 4:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will take place privately on Sunday, April 28th at the Lithuanian Cemetery in Haverhill.
