Jon Michael “Mickey” Melton, 75, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Friday, March 29, 2019, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, with the Rev. Ronald Parks officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Melton was born February 26, 1944, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to the late Rev. Earl & Inez Rathburn Melton. He left school and served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. He retired after working 40 years with General Telephone as an engineer. He also worked with Whitaker Communications. His work took him all over the United States. He worked in hurricane restoration and met many people whose lives he made an impact on. Mr. Melton believed in keeping his word and had a very strong work ethic and that was very important to him – working to take care of his family.He worked right up until the day before he went into the hospital and he talked about working throughout his illness. He loved to laugh and was always smiling. He enjoyed restoring old trucks and will be remembered by friends and family as humble, giving, and loving. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marsha Padgett Melton of Fitzgerald; children: Michelle Melton Bass of Irwin County, Nickey Melton Brewer & Jason of Ocilla, and Michael Cody Melton of Fitzgerald; grandchildren and his nicknames for them: Cagney “Sonny” Jolley, Bailey “Billy” Bass, Kailee “Bug” Brewer, Matthew “Shorty” Brewer, Brodie “Rainman” Brewer, Emily “JuJu” Brewer, and Blaze “Blade” Brewer; and a brother, Earl Melton, Jr. & Peggy of Fitzgerald. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne Melton; a granddaughter, Michaela Hollingsworth; and a sister, Sherry Alligood.
